Resume keywords for sales reps
The terms sales rep and account executive postings repeat, grouped by where they belong on the page. A sales CV is read for one thing first: what you sold against what you were asked to sell.
What sales reps postings actually ask for
Sales postings are short on adjectives and long on numbers. They ask for quota attainment, a pipeline you built yourself, and a CRM named as a product, usually Salesforce or HubSpot. Then they name the motion: prospecting and cold calling for new business, account management and upselling for existing customers, territory management for outside sales. A CV that says 'strong communicator with a passion for sales' matches none of it.
The keywords, grouped
Grouped by the job each one does, because where a term belongs on the page matters as much as whether it is there at all.
| Group | Terms a posting uses | Why this group matters |
|---|---|---|
| Numbers and targets | quota attainment, annual quota, revenue closed, average deal size, win rate, sales cycle, pipeline generated, new logos, meetings booked, renewal rate, upsell revenue | Read first. Give the quota next to the attainment, and the period next to both. |
| Prospecting and pipeline | prospecting, lead generation, cold calling, cold email, outbound, inbound, lead qualification, BANT, discovery calls, appointment setting, social selling, referrals | The new business half of the job. Name the channels you actually worked. |
| Closing and accounts | product demos, presentations, objection handling, negotiation, closing, consultative selling, solution selling, account management, upselling, cross-selling, customer retention, B2B sales | What happens after the first meeting. These belong in bullets with a deal or a customer attached. |
| Outside and field sales | territory management, route planning, field sales, client visits, face-to-face selling, key accounts, distributor relationships, trade shows | Only if you sold in person. Give the territory size and how many accounts you covered. |
| Systems | Salesforce, HubSpot, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Outreach, Salesloft, Gong, ZoomInfo, Apollo, Excel | The CRM is often a stated requirement and is searched by name. List what you logged, forecast and prospected in. |
| Verbs that carry evidence | closed, exceeded, generated, booked, won, opened, expanded, renewed, negotiated, converted | Open bullets with these. Each one asks for a number after it. |
Where each group belongs on the page
Summary: segment, quota and attainment
Two lines: what you sell, to whom, and how you did against target. 118% of a 900K quota selling to mid-market SaaS buyers places you before the reader reaches your first job.
Skills block: CRM and prospecting tools
Salesforce or HubSpot by name, then Sales Navigator, your sequencing tool and any qualification method. This block is searched before it is read.
Bullets: one number per bullet
Revenue closed, meetings booked, win rate, deal size. A bullet without a number reads as a duty, and a sales reader skips duties.
Outside sales: the territory
Region, number of accounts, and how much of the week you spent on the road. Field roles are hired on whether you have covered ground like theirs.
A keyword only counts inside evidence
Both columns below contain the keyword. Only one of them survives a hiring manager reading it, which is the whole reason a keyword list is not a strategy on its own.
The first claims success. The second shows the target, the result and the period.
Consistently exceeded sales targets in a fast-paced environment.
Closed 1.06M against a 900K annual quota in 2025 (118%), with an average deal size of 24K across 44 new logos.
Prospecting counts when it turns into pipeline you can measure.
Responsible for prospecting and generating new leads.
Built outbound sequences in Outreach and Sales Navigator that booked 15 discovery calls a month and generated 1.4M in qualified pipeline over two quarters.
How these terms appear in a real posting
Where these CVs lose points
- Attainment with no quota. 118% of what? Give the base, or the percentage reads as a number picked to flatter.
- No period. A strong quarter and a strong year are different claims. Say which.
- The CRM left out. Salesforce and HubSpot are among the most searched terms in sales postings.
- Inside and outside sales mixed up. If the posting is field sales, lead with territory and client visits. If it is inside sales, lead with calls, sequences and meetings booked.
- Adjectives instead of figures. 'Driven', 'motivated' and 'target-oriented' take the space a number should fill.
Check your CV against the posting in front of you
This page lists what sales reps postings tend to ask for. The advert you are answering today weights them differently, and that is the list that decides your application. Paste both into the checker at the top of this page to see which of its terms your CV never mentions, or read the worked Sales CV example to see the terms sitting inside real bullets.

Sales resume keywords: FAQ
What keywords should a sales resume have?
The ones the posting uses, backed by numbers. Most sales postings ask for quota attainment, prospecting, pipeline, a named CRM, and either account management or territory management. Use the groups above as a checklist, then check against the real advert.
What is different about outside sales resume keywords?
Outside sales postings add territory management, client visits, route planning and key accounts. Give the size of the territory and the number of accounts you covered, because that is how a field sales manager judges fit.
What if I have never carried a quota?
Use the numbers you do have: calls made, meetings booked, leads qualified, customers kept. In retail or customer service, sales per shift or upsell rate count. A real activity number beats an invented revenue figure.
Should I list Salesforce if I only used it a little?
Yes, if you used it in the job. Say what you did in it, such as logging calls or keeping your pipeline current, so the reader knows how deep it goes.
Can I just copy these keywords onto my resume?
No, and a CV built that way falls apart in the first interview. Use the list as a checklist against work you have actually done. A term you cannot evidence in a bullet is a term that moves your rejection from the screen to the phone call, which is worse for you, not better.
How many keywords should a resume have?
There is no target number, and any tool that gives you one is guessing. What matters is coverage of the specific posting in front of you: the terms it repeats should be findable on your CV, in your own evidence. Twelve well placed terms beat forty in a list.
