CV Format for South Africa: What Recruiters Expect in 2026

South African CVs have their own habits: driver's licence codes, languages, matric results and named referees. Here is what to keep, what to drop, and why your ID number stays off the page.

A South African CV looks a lot like a British one, with a few local habits on top. Recruiters expect to see your driver's licence code, the languages you speak and named referees. They do not need your ID number, your photo or your marital status, even though many old templates still include them. This guide sets out the format that works in 2026, section by section.

In South Africa the document is called a CV. In the US the same thing is called a resume, and our guide to the difference between a CV and a resume covers where the two split. Everything below uses the South African meaning.

How long should a South African CV be?

Aim for two pages. PNet's guidance puts one page as ideal and two as acceptable when you have years of experience. The UKZN career services handbook says a two-page CV is acceptable for most organisations. You will still see plenty of three and four page CVs from South African candidates. They rarely help. The extra pages usually hold duties, not results.

Where you areTarget lengthWhat fills the space
Matriculant or graduate1 page, 2 at mostQualifications, projects, vacation work, learnerships
2 to 10 years2 pagesRecent roles in detail, older roles shorter
10 years or more2 pages, 3 at mostLast 10 years in detail, earlier roles as single lines

Our full guide on how long a CV should be explains how to cut without losing your strongest material. The short rule: every line should carry a keyword, a number or a named tool.

The section order that works

South African recruiters expect a reverse chronological CV. That means your most recent job comes first in the experience section, and your most recent qualification comes first in the education section. Skills-based layouts that hide dates make recruiters wonder what you are hiding. Use this order:

1

Contact and personal details

Full name, mobile number in +27 format, a professional email, city or suburb, LinkedIn URL. Then a short line with nationality or work permit status, driver's licence code and languages.

2

Profile

Two or three lines that say what you do, how long you have done it, and what you want next. Name the job title from the advert if it fits you.

3

Work experience

Job title, company, town, month and year for start and end. Under each role, three to six bullets that start with a verb and show a result. Include learnerships, internships and vacation work.

4

Qualifications

Degree or diploma, institution, year, and NQF level if you know it. Then matric with the year and school. Add professional registrations such as SAICA, ECSA or HPCSA where they apply.

5

Skills and certifications

Software, systems and short courses that the advert mentions. Name the tool: Sage Pastel, SAP, Excel pivot tables, not computer literate.

6

Referees

Two or three people with name, title, company, phone and email. Recent managers carry the most weight.

Personal details: what to include and what to leave off

This is where South African CVs differ most from British or American ones, and where most old templates go wrong. The Protection of Personal Information Act, POPIA, has been fully in force since 1 July 2021. It requires anyone collecting personal information to collect only what they need for a stated purpose. An employer deciding whether to interview you needs to know whether you can legally work, where you are and whether you can do the job. Anything beyond that can wait.

DetailInclude?Why
ID numberNo, until askedFraud risk if the CV is shared. Employers ask for it at the vetting stage.
Nationality or work permitYesRecruiters screen for the right to work. State permit type if you are not a citizen.
Driver's licenceYes, with codeMany adverts require one. Write Code B or Code EB, and own vehicle if true.
LanguagesYesMany roles serve customers in more than one language. Give a level: fluent, conversational.
PhotoNoTakes space and invites bias. Add one only if the advert asks.
Date of birth or ageNoNot needed to judge your skills.
Marital status, dependantsNoNot relevant to the job.
Race, gender, disabilityOnly if askedSome adverts and application forms ask for employment equity purposes. Answer there, not on the CV.
Health, religionNoPOPIA treats these as special personal information.

Some adverts are marked as employment equity positions and ask for race or gender. Answer that on the application form. Your CV does not need to carry it.

Matric, tertiary and foreign qualifications

List your highest qualification first. Give the full name of the qualification, the institution, and the year you completed it. If you know the NQF level, add it, because many adverts state a minimum level such as NQF 6. If you are still studying, write expected and the year.

Matric matters most early on. If you finished school in the last few years or matric is your highest qualification, list the year, the school and any subjects that relate to the role. If you passed with a bachelor's pass or distinctions, say so. Ten years into a career, one line is enough.

If you studied outside South Africa, help the recruiter place your qualification. The South African Qualifications Authority, SAQA, evaluates foreign qualifications and compares them with the National Qualifications Framework. Some work visa applications require a SAQA certificate, and many employers ask for one. If you have it, write SAQA evaluated, NQF level 7 next to the qualification. If your application is in progress, say that instead.

References: name them

South African recruiters often phone referees once you are on the shortlist. A CV with two or three named referees saves them a step. Give each referee's name, job title, company, phone number and email, and say how they know you. Pick people who managed your work recently. A lecturer or learnership mentor works for graduates.

Always ask first. Tell each referee which role you applied for and what you want them to speak to. If you are job hunting while employed and cannot name your current manager yet, write references available on request and have the list ready.

File type and job portals

Send a PDF unless the advert asks for Word. A PDF keeps your layout intact on any device. Name the file with your name and the role, such as Thandi-Nkosi-CV-Financial-Accountant.pdf.

Many large employers and job portals in South Africa screen applications with an applicant tracking system. These systems read plain layouts best. Use one column, standard headings such as Work Experience and Qualifications, and no text inside images, tables or text boxes. Put your contact details in the body of the page, not in the header. The ATS resume checker shows how software reads your file.

Portal profiles often ask you to fill in your history field by field as well as upload a CV. Keep both consistent. A recruiter who sees different dates in your profile and your CV will ask why. If you have a gap, give a short honest reason. Our guide on explaining an employment gap on your CV shows how, and the free gap explanation generator drafts the line for you.

Tailor it to each advert

A clean format gets your CV read. Matching the advert gets you shortlisted. Read the requirements, then make sure the top half of your first page answers them in the advert's own words. If it asks for IFRS reporting and you have done it, the phrase IFRS should appear in a bullet with a result. The resume job match checker shows which requirements your CV misses, and our guide to tailoring a CV to a job description walks through it.

A generic bullet and a tailored one

The advert asks for month-end close, reconciliations and Sage experience.

Before

Responsible for various accounting duties and assisting the finance team with reports.

After

Ran month-end close for three entities in Sage Evolution, cutting the close from eight working days to five and clearing 140 aged reconciling items.

If you want this done for you, FitMyCV reads a job link or pasted description and rewrites your CV to match it, then writes a cover letter. You download both as PDFs. Use tailor CV from a job link to try it. In South Africa it costs $6.99 a month or $16.99 for lifetime access. Free accounts see a preview of the tailored CV. The full document needs a paid plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard CV format in South Africa?

A reverse chronological CV of about two pages. Start with your name and contact details, add a short profile, then work experience with the most recent job first, then qualifications, skills and languages, then two or three referees. Use a simple layout with no tables, graphics or photo, and send it as a PDF unless the advert asks for Word.

Should I put my ID number on my CV in South Africa?

No. Leave it off until an employer asks for it, usually at the offer or background check stage. A CV gets forwarded, uploaded to portals and stored in inboxes you do not control, and a full ID number is useful to fraudsters. POPIA expects employers to collect only the personal information they need, and they do not need your ID number to decide whether to interview you.

How many pages should a South African CV be?

Two pages for most people. Graduates can often fit everything on one page and should not pad to reach two. Many South African CVs still run to three pages, but job portal and university career guidance points to two. Go to three only if you have a long career and every line is relevant to the role.

Do I need a photo on my CV in South Africa?

No. A photo adds nothing to your case for most roles and takes space from your experience. Leave it off unless the advert asks for one, which is mainly the case in modelling, acting and some front of house roles.

Should I include my matric results on my CV?

Include matric if it is your highest qualification or you graduated recently. List the year and your school, and add strong subject results if they relate to the role, such as Mathematics for a finance post. Once you have a degree or diploma and a few years of work, a single line for matric is enough.

Should I list references or write available on request?

List two or three referees with their name, job title, company, phone number and email. South African recruiters often call referees once you are shortlisted, so named referees save a step. Ask each person first and tell them which role you applied for. If space is tight or you are job hunting quietly, available on request is acceptable.

Do I need a SAQA evaluation for a foreign qualification?

Many employers ask for one, and some work visa applications require it. SAQA, the South African Qualifications Authority, evaluates foreign qualifications and places them on the National Qualifications Framework. If you have one, note it next to the qualification. If you have applied, say so, because processing can take months.
