CV Format for Nigeria: What Employers Check in 2026

Nigerian employers check things UK and US guides never mention, starting with NYSC. Here is how to show it, which personal details to drop, and when O'level results still belong on the page.

Most CV advice online is written for the UK or the US. A Nigerian CV shares the basics but has its own checks. Employers look for your NYSC status. Government roles may ask for your state of origin. Graduate adverts may still mention O'level results. At the same time, many old Nigerian templates carry details that hurt you, like marital status, religion and a passport photo. This guide sets out the format that works in 2026.

Nigeria uses the word CV. In the US the same document is a resume, and our guide to the difference between a CV and a resume explains where the two split. Everything here uses the Nigerian meaning.

How long should a Nigerian CV be?

Jobberman sets two pages as the maximum and says concise CVs work better. Within that limit, match the length to what you have.

Where you areTarget lengthWhat fills the space
Fresh graduate or corps member1 pageDegree, NYSC, internships (SIWES), projects, skills
3 to 10 years2 pagesRecent roles in detail, results with numbers
10 years or more2 pagesLast 10 years in detail, earlier roles as single lines

If you are a fresh graduate, do not stretch to two pages. Our guide on writing a CV with no experience shows how to fill one strong page with projects, SIWES placements and your service year. For the general rule, see how long a CV should be.

The section order that works

Use a reverse chronological layout: most recent job first, most recent qualification first. Use this order:

1

Contact details

Full name, one phone number in +234 format, a professional email, city and state of residence, LinkedIn URL. One number is enough. Jobberman advises against listing several.

2

Profile

Two or three lines that say what you do, how long you have done it, and the role you want. Use the job title from the advert if it fits.

3

Work experience

Job title, organisation, city, month and year for start and end. Under each role, three to six bullets that start with a verb and show a result. Include NYSC primary assignment and SIWES if you are early in your career.

4

Education and NYSC

Degree, class of degree, institution, year. Then your NYSC status in one line. Fresh graduates add one line of O'level results.

5

Skills and certifications

Named tools and certifications that the advert mentions: Excel, Power BI, SAP, ICAN, CIPM, Google Data Analytics. Not computer literate.

6

Referees

Two or three people with name, title, organisation, phone and email.

How to show NYSC status

NYSC is the line Nigerian employers look for first on a graduate CV. Section 12 of the NYSC Act requires employers to demand a certificate of national service or an exemption certificate from any graduate before employing them. The NYSC Director-General has repeated this to employers. A CV with no NYSC line leaves the recruiter to guess.

Write your status in plain words. Use the one that matches your certificate:

  • Completed: NYSC: completed, 2025. Certificate of National Service available.
  • Exempted: NYSC: exempted (graduated above the age limit). Exemption certificate available.
  • Excluded: NYSC: excluded (part-time programme). Exclusion letter available.
  • Serving: NYSC: currently serving, Lagos State. Passing out in March 2027.

If you served, also list your place of primary assignment in the experience section, the same way you would list a job. Give your role and what you did. A corps member who taught 200 students mathematics or ran a clinic's patient records has real experience to show.

A weak NYSC entry and a strong one

The same service year, written two ways for an operations role.

Before

NYSC, Ministry of Works, Abuja. Assisted with general office duties.

After

Corps member, Federal Ministry of Works, Abuja. Rebuilt the unit's file tracking sheet in Excel, cutting the time to locate a contract file from a day to under an hour.

Personal details: what to include and what to leave off

Old Nigerian CV templates open with a block of personal data: date of birth, sex, marital status, religion, state of origin, LGA, hobbies. Jobberman now calls religion and state of origin outdated and advises leaving them off unless requested. Follow one rule: include a personal detail only when the advert or form asks for it.

DetailInclude?Why
Phone numberYes, one, in +234 formatRecruiters call. +234 803 123 4567 works for local and overseas employers.
Professional emailYesfirstname.lastname@ reads better than a nickname address.
City and state of residenceYesEmployers check if you can get to the office or need to relocate.
NYSC statusYesEmployers must see your certificate before hiring a graduate.
State of origin and LGAOnly if askedCommon on government forms. Not needed for most private roles.
Date of birth or ageOnly if askedInclude it when the advert sets an age limit.
Marital statusNoNot relevant to the job.
Religion, tribeNoNot relevant, and invites bias.
Passport photoNoTakes space. Add one only if the advert asks.

Government applications are the main exception. Federal and state jobs often ask for state of origin and LGA, partly because Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution sets the federal character principle for public appointments. When a form asks, answer on the form. Add it to the CV only when the advert says to.

Education and O'level results

Put your highest qualification first: degree or HND, class of degree, institution and year. If you have a first class or second class upper, show it, because some graduate trainee adverts set a minimum class. Add relevant professional certifications such as ICAN, ACCA or CIPM.

O'level results are a judgement call. Jobberman advises including secondary school only if you are a fresh graduate. Follow that, with one addition: if the advert lists O'level requirements, include them whatever your level. One line is enough: WAEC SSCE, 2018: 8 credits including English and Mathematics. Do not list every subject and grade unless asked.

Referees

List two or three referees by name. Give each one's name, job title, organisation, phone number and email. Former managers make the strongest referees. For fresh graduates, a lecturer, project supervisor or NYSC place of assignment supervisor works well.

Jobberman's advice is direct: only include referees you have told in advance. Call them, tell them which role you applied for, and remind them what you worked on together. A referee who cannot remember you does more harm than none.

File type and job boards

Send a PDF unless the advert asks for Word. Use one column, standard headings such as Work Experience and Education, and no text inside images, tables or text boxes. Put your contact details in the body of the page, not the header, so applicant tracking systems can read them. The ATS resume checker shows how software reads your file.

On Jobberman and other boards, fill in your profile to match your CV. If your dates differ between the two, a recruiter will notice. If you have a gap after school or after NYSC, give one short honest line. Our guide on explaining an employment gap on your CV shows how, and the free gap explanation generator drafts it for you.

Tailor it to each advert

A clean format gets your CV read. Matching the advert gets you shortlisted. Read the requirements and make sure the top half of your first page answers them in the advert's own words. If it asks for reconciliation experience and you have it, the word reconciliation should appear in a bullet with a result. The resume job match checker shows which requirements your CV misses, and our guide to tailoring a CV to a job description walks through it.

If you want this done for you, FitMyCV reads a job link or pasted description and rewrites your CV to match it, then writes a cover letter. You download both as PDFs. Try it with tailor CV from a job link. In Nigeria it costs $6.99 a month or $16.99 for lifetime access. Free accounts see a preview of the tailored CV. The full document needs a paid plan.

Applying to South African employers too? The CV format for South Africa has different rules on length and personal details. Our CV templates give you a clean layout to start from.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard CV format in Nigeria?

A reverse chronological CV. One page for fresh graduates, two pages for experienced candidates. Start with your name and contact details, add a short profile, then work experience with the most recent role first, then education, NYSC status, skills and certifications, then two or three referees. Use a plain layout and send it as a PDF.

How do I write NYSC on my CV?

State your status in one clear line: completed with the year, exempted, excluded, or currently serving with your expected passing out month. If you served, list your place of primary assignment like a job, with your role and what you achieved. Employers are required by the NYSC Act to ask for your certificate of national service or exemption certificate before hiring you, so they look for this line.

Should I put my state of origin on my CV?

Only if the advert or application form asks for it. Federal and state government jobs often do, partly because of the federal character principle in the 1999 Constitution. Most private sector employers do not need it, and Jobberman advises leaving it off unless requested.

Should I include my date of birth and marital status?

Leave marital status off unless the employer asks. It has nothing to do with your ability to do the job. Date of birth follows the same rule: include it when the advert sets an age limit or the form asks for it, and leave it off otherwise.

Should I include my WAEC or NECO results on my CV?

Include one line for your O'level results if you are a fresh graduate or the advert lists O'level requirements, such as credits in English and Mathematics. Experienced candidates can drop them. Do not list every subject and grade unless the employer asks.

How long should a CV be in Nigeria?

One page if you are a fresh graduate or have less than about three years of experience. Two pages for experienced candidates. Jobberman sets two pages as the maximum, and a page of padding hurts a graduate CV more than it helps.

Should I list referees or write available on request?

List two or three referees with name, title, organisation, phone and email. Nigerian employers commonly ask for referees, and named ones save a step. Tell each referee before you send the CV.

Should my CV be in PDF or Word?

PDF, unless the advert asks for Word. A PDF keeps your layout the same on every phone and laptop. Name the file with your name and the role, for example Chiamaka-Eze-CV-Data-Analyst.pdf.
